How might we see the familiar anew?
The objects and landscapes of everyday life often become so familiar that we take them for granted. Yet when they are removed from their original contexts, altered in scale or function, or brought together in unexpected ways, we begin to recognize that the world before us can be understood differently.
Everything In Its Right Place brings together the works of Mia Liu and Tania Tsong de O’pazo in two chapters, Encountering and Dwelling, exploring the relationships between people, objects, memory, and space. The word “right” in the exhibition title suggests not an absolute correctness, but a sense of fittingness—of things finding their place in relation to one another. As these relationships shift, so do the positions things occupy. Through displacement, deconstruction, and reconfiguration, new meanings gradually emerge.
Mia Liu approaches her practice through the body, materials, and space. Through cutting, joining, layering, and extending, she transforms familiar forms and scales. As viewers move closer, step back, or shift their perspectives, the works and their spatial relationships change, revealing that the act of looking is itself situated. Tania Tsong de O’pazo’s practice, meanwhile, is deeply informed by her experiences of living across different cultures and geographies. Maps, distance, memory, and everyday objects become ways of exploring questions of cultural identity and belonging. Images move between two and three dimensions, while ordinary objects, freed from their original functions, open up new possibilities for association and imagination.
For both artists, relationships are central to their practices. From objects and space, materials and perception, to everyday experiences and imagined worlds, they explore how things acquire new meanings through shifting connections, opening up the boundaries between the artificial and the natural, the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, and reality and imagination. This exploration extends into the architecture of the exhibition itself. The scale of the building, the play of light, and the transitions between spaces make the notion of “in-between” a tangible, sensory experience. The artworks respond to the architecture, while the movement of visitors brings works, space, and the body into an ever-changing relationship of perception.
This reflection on position and relationships also extends to women's lived experiences. As roles, relationships, and living environments change, how do we come to understand ourselves anew, and how might we relate to the world around us? Everything In Its Right Place embraces these moments of becoming, before meanings and positions have fully settled. Encountering unsettles familiar orders, while Dwelling invites us to continue exploring ways of relating to the world amid constant change.
