For over half a century, the American artist James Turrell (b. 1943) has worked directly with light and space to create artworks that engage viewers with the limits and wonder of human perception. His fascination with the phenomena of light is related to his personal, inward search for mankind’s place in the universe. Influenced by his Quaker upbringing, which he characterizes as having a ‘straightforward, strict presentation of the sublime,’ Turrell’s art prompts greater self-awareness through a similar discipline of silent contemplation, patience and meditation.

*The installation starts at 10:00-12:30 and 14:30-17:00.

The exhibition is based on "Ch’an" and presents 65 years of Hsiao Chin's creative essence, from exploration, transformation to ascendance. In the 1960s, from the Punto international movement to the exploration of the Tao and Chi, the Eastern spirit and cosmology, the transition to Dancing Light series and the subsequent Sun and Universe Energy series. At last, we will penetrate the essence of Hsiao Chin's Ch’an. A life cycle is recurring and endless but not dominated by individual which become the axis of Hsiao Chin's narrative to his creation. With the spirit of modesty and surpassing the mortal world, artist Hsiao Chin presents the eternal spirit of "Ch’an" and "Chi".

Franz Bette born in the middle of Germany, his thinking and his work are anchored in European culture. For the exhibition in ALIEN Art Centre and for the new audience in Taiwan, he has developed a body of work which internalises his experience in Asia. For this he allows new elements to intervene in his artistic approach. His Western-influenced vocabulary of metal has been expanded by materials with Asian connotations, such as porcelain, bamboo, wood and textile.

Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak. But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it... By reference to an episode from a well-known literature Ways of seeing written by John Berger (1972), it is pointed that the relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.

After the rain, a few raindrops clang onto the power cable. Pulled by gravity, they glided and glittered against the colourless sky...We try to capture illuminating moments amidst the colourless flow of time. “Once upon a time,” one of our interviewees noted, “Some safeguarded this place in such a way.” In this very room where soldiers reported for duty, Crossing pays tribute to those who contributed to history. The past shapes the present. Let us contemplate these distant voyages, and reflect on what is immediately ours.

Der rote Faden – the theme of contemporary jewellery held by the ALIEN Art Centre for the artist – Franz Bette. The phrase Der rote Faden has meaning for artists who try to use the "value" of art to stimulate our minds, and then let such speculations produce qualitative changes. I think in such a rich and selective era, "value" has become the standard for us to measure things, but what is the value in our lives? Perhaps we can re-explore and reflect through this Franz Bette solo exhibition.
